How Do You Move A Baby Grand Piano

Pianos usually get spoil when moved around carelessly and most movers have accounted that the piano is among the top frequently damaged items. Do you want to move your grand piano? Following the tips here would help to save you from spoiling your baby grand piano. In this article, we provide a guide on how to disassemble, pad, and load grand pianos in such a way that will reduce the chances of damage. The following tips ensure safe movement:

  1. At least three people are needed in moving the grand piano. If you need to take the baby grand piano up or down the building, then you might need to have extra hands from at least three persons to make it happen.
  2. If you disassemble all the moving parts, ensure to place all the hardware inside a well-labeled bag and then keep the bags inside a labeled box as well.
  3. Pull out the lyre from the track and place it in a clean furniture pad.
  4. Carefully remove the lid, by removing the pins. One person could wiggle the lid while the second person carefully loosens the pin. Ensure that the pliers used to loosen the pin don’t cause any damage to the surface of the keyboard. Wrap the lid carefully inside a furniture pad.
  5. After carefully removing the prop that holds the lid open wrap it in a clean furniture pad.
  6. The next part is the pedal assembly which is removed and then wrapped in a furniture pad. Ensure that the braces at the end of each of the assemblies rest in the slots. Ensure that while you’re taking out the screws you do not drop the braces. Avoid bending the push-rods by placing them carefully. You can use masking tape to number the rods. This will make the reassembling easier ensuring that the rods are placed in the right spots.
  7. Roll a clean furniture pad and use it to pad the piano. Also, cover the top of the piano with clean furniture pads which are folded around the keyboard. Hold the pads firmly with a rubber band. Clean off any dust on the top of the keyboard before padding. If you decide to pad a highly polished surface with dust on its surface be rest assured that you might end up having scratches on the surface of the piano.
  8. Put the piano board in such a position that it can easily receive the piano. Position the raised brace to be at the end of the keyboard of the piano.
  9. Someone should be positioned at the left-hand side of the keyboard before removing the left front leg of the piano. While this is being done, the other two persons should then hold and support the left front corner. The screws should be removed and the person holding the under of the piano should move before the leg is being removed. Ensure that two persons are holding the piano before the leg is being removed by the third person. Some pianos do not have interchangeable legs and as such their position should be marked before they are removed.
  10. The next thing to do is to allow someone holds the piano at one end while it is being lowered. The end with the attached legs should be held to reduce the pressure at such an end. Make sure that the piano is well-positioned uprightly before it is being lifted. Someone should always hold the piano steady.
  11. The other two legs can then be removed and then wrapped in a clean furniture pad.
  12. Tie the two ends of the straps together to prevent the strap near the narrow end of the piano from slipping off.
  13. While moving the piano up or down the stairs, you can make use of the board as a skid. All you need to do is to place a pad on the stairs for protection to prevent the body of the keyboard from damaging. You can also use a hump strap tied to the top end of the piano board to prevent the piano from slipping off.

Moving a baby grand piano may seem difficult but doing it efficiently and carefully will prevent any form of damage to your piano.
