Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Music Education
In the program of study which leads to the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, the student can learn advanced professional, academic, and research preparation for musical careers in performing, teaching, composing, and conducting. The major focus is usually on performance, music education, composition, and choral conducting.
Degree Requirements
The Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education is a professional degree that is meant for individuals that are committed to pursuing a career in music education in the area of leadership on music education policy both in and outside of the schools. There are three aspects of the degree program and they are the actual course work, qualifying examination, and finally a dissertation. It is expected that students complete a minimum of 48-semester credits with grades no lower than B– and a cumulative GPA not below 3.0 in the graduate-level coursework.
It is expected that the degree work is completed within seven years of study beginning from the matriculating date.
The DMA in Music Education is comprised of three areas which include: the main DMA curriculum, course work in the major then lastly is an academic field and two elective fields.
The DMA prepares students to become competent educators even outside the public school setting. Students are trained for instructing both in alternative mad traditional settings. The alternative settings could either be a community-based program or the use of online classes.
Also, students of this degree program can learn innovative courses that provide teachings at the college level. Students also get to interact and work with professors in music methodology classes. Students of the program are exposed to courses such as psychology, philosophy, research, history of Music education. Students of this program tend to learn beyond the scope of traditional band/choir model/orchestra and learn more advanced musical forms and styles that are more relevant in time and appeal to the present student population.
At this stage, the professional training is based on teaching students how to work with cutting-edge technological tools. They are also trained on how to get amazing pedagogical skills and scholarships. Students would learn writing and design skills necessary for diverse multimedia publications and yet still carry out in-depth research or do creative work in advanced forms and styles guaranteed to lead to the advancement of the profession.
